The best way to decide what to buy for studio equipment is to test and compare different options yourself. If it is expensive equipment, it can be difficult to get exactly what you want to test, but thanks to Audio Test Kitchen, you can at least now try 300 microphones at home from the sofa. (In English at the bottom of the page).
Audio Test Kitchen (audiotestkitchen.com) is a web-based app that is there for you to test and compare studio equipment. In today’s format, they have 300 condenser microphones in different price ranges that you can test. They have a number of different songs in different genres where you can either listen to the whole mix recorded with the same microphone or the different isolated tracks separately. Everything is recorded with exactly the same sources and signal paths so that the only difference is the microphone. This makes it brutally easy to hear exactly how big, or small, the difference is between different microphones.
If you want to know more about exactly how everything went, you can find an episode with Alex Oana, one of the founders, on the podcast Recording Studio Rockstars. If you want to hang over my shoulder when I test microphones on the website, just watch the video.
