Test 300 microphones at home

By | April 5, 2021

The best way to decide what to buy for studio equipment is to test and compare different options yourself. If it is expensive equipment, it can be difficult to get exactly what you want to test, but thanks to Audio Test Kitchen, you can at least now try 300 microphones at home from the sofa. (In English at the bottom of the page).

Audio Test Kitchen (audiotestkitchen.com) is a web-based app that is there for you to test and compare studio equipment. In today’s format, they have 300 condenser microphones in different price ranges that you can test. They have a number of different songs in different genres where you can either listen to the whole mix recorded with the same microphone or the different isolated tracks separately. Everything is recorded with exactly the same sources and signal paths so that the only difference is the microphone. This makes it brutally easy to hear exactly how big, or small, the difference is between different microphones.

If you want to know more about exactly how everything went, you can find an episode with Alex Oana, one of the founders, on the podcast Recording Studio Rockstars. If you want to hang over my shoulder when I test microphones on the website, just watch the video.

The best way to decide what studio gear you want to buy is to try it out and compare different options. If it’s really expensive equipment it can be hard to get your hands on it, but thanks to Audio Test Kitchen at least you can now try 300 different microphones right from your home.

Audio Test Kitchen (audiotestkitchen.com) is a web based app that are made for you to try and compare studio equipment. In the current format it contains 300 condenser microphones in different price ranges that you can test and compare. They have a couple of different songs where you can chose to listen to the full mix with the microphone you chose, or the isolated tracks by them even. Everything is recorded with the exact same sources and signal paths which means the only changing factor is the microphone. This makes it really easy to hear exactly how big, or small, the difference is between different models.

If you want to know more details about how it all was made I recommend that you look up an episode with Alex Oana, one of the founders, on the Recording Studio Rockstars Podcast. If you want to look over my shoulder while I try out microphones just check out this video.
