Most people know that there are both unbalanced and balanced signals and cables. Most people probably also know that balanced is usually preferable, but the question is whether most people know why it is better and how it actually works.
There is a lot of technical information and explanations for how this works. On the other hand, I thought I would give myself a slightly more practical explanation with clear examples. A couple of sound examples were constructed by twisting two unbalanced cables around an electric transformer to get a really high amount of interference sound, which is then conjured away by means of phase reversal, just like in a balanced signal.
