Four inexpensive ways to control your vortex drum

By | April 5, 2021

Recording drums is a lot of fun. I would like to say that it is my favorite instrument to record, but it can also be the most difficult. The vortex sound is what sets the tone for the whole drum sound and it can sometimes be very frustrating to get. (In English at the bottom of the page).

Even if you have a good grip on tuning your vortex drum, you have probably, more times than you can count on both hands, had problems getting the right reverberation. There are lots of products to control the reverberation of the vortex drum, but you can get far on things you already have or can get hold of very cheaply. In this week’s video, I go through four ways I usually use to get the sound I want. You probably have almost all the stuff at home already.

Part of this week’s video is a clip of a longer instructional course in drum recording that is available on Skillshare. Click here if you are interested in looking at it. Skillshare is a service with a monthly cost, but if you have not registered before, you get two weeks off, which gives you plenty of time to check out my course on weekdays. Merry Christmas!

Four cheap ways to control your snare sound

Recording drums is lots of fun. I would say it’s my favorite instrument to record, but it can also be the most difficult. The sound of the snare is what sets the tone for the whole drum kit, and it can be frustrating to get it right.

Even if you are really good at tuning your snare drum I’m sure that you, more often that you can count on both your hands, had problems with controlling the sustain of the snare. There are tons of products that you can buy to help you with this, but you can come far with stuff you already have around, or for very little money. In this weeks video I’ll show you four ways I usually go for to get the sound I’m looking for. I bet you have most of the things at home already.

Parts of the video are snippets of a longer instruction class about drum recording on Skillshare. Click here if you’re interested in having a look at it. Skillshare is a subscriptions based service, but if you have not registered before you get two weeks for free and that will give you more than enough time to check out my class during the holidays. Merry Christmas!
